The woman second from right in the front row is my grandmother, Isabella Anderson Swenson. This was probably taken before her marriage to Helmer Swenson. She lived at what is now 232 N. Prairie Street. At that time it was 419 N. Prairie St. She was born September 24, 1878 in Fergus Falls MN and moved with her mother to Stoughton in about 1898. She is wearing one her her mother's old fashioned dresses. The woman on the right is wearing Isabella's mother's 1865 wedding dress. I think she is Eda Swenson (later Isabella's sister-in-law, sister of Helmer Swenson) who later married Vivian Brown. This photo was likely taken in about 1900 as I have other photos of an "old fashioned party" held by Isabella that year.

The buggy is parked in front of the Linderud home (at least it was in the 50's) which was located on the northwest corner of Summit Ave. and Broadway St. The people in the buggy are likely Linderud family members.

From D. Westby by email: I heard Carl Sampson talk about this guy. He lived in a house next to the railroad tracks on Main St and he operated the arm that closed the street when a train came through. You see the arm on the left side of the image.

The Townsend Yahara Ice wagon is Earl Townsend sitting on the wagon. Earl would cut Blocks of ice in the Yahara River Bay behind the Stoughton Hospital and float the 2 foot thick blocks of ice down the river and store in the ice house on Washington Street behind the Senor Center. The building is still there. The ice would be packed in sawdust to prevent it from melting. He would deliver the blocks of ice to the houses and put it in their ice box. Children would run after the ice wagon, in hopes that Earl would chip some ice off of the blocks for them to chew on.
